HybridNeuro Workshop on Invasive Interfaces at Chalmers University of Technology
From January 7th to 14th, the Neural Interfacing and Motor Control Lab at Chalmers University of Technology had the pleasure of organizing and hosting the HybridNeuro Workshop on Invasive Interfaces (WSII25), welcoming researchers and students from across Europe.
The workshop began with a lecture by Hamid Reza Marateb from the University of Isfahan and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, entitled "Template-matching based decomposition". Then, Mehdi Shirzadi from Chalmers University gave a talk on "EMG Signal Simulation," emphasizing the importance of simulated signals for testing algorithms before experimental data analysis. The day concluded with hands-on training sessions led by Mehdi Shirzadi and Silvia Muceli, providing practical experience in EMG signal simulations and signal decomposition.
On the second day, Aleš Holobar, Nina Murks, and Martin Šavc from the University of Maribor, gave lectures and practical sessions on high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) decomposition, enhancing participants' understanding of this advanced technique.
The third day featured a lecture by Silvia Muceli on the analysis of motor unit properties. Later, Sabine Reinfeldt presented her work on bone conduction implants, and Giacomo Valle gave a talk on brain-controlled bionic limbs. The day finished with a hands-on session led by Mehdi Shirzadi and Silvia Muceli, focusing on analyzing motor unit data.
The last day of the Workshop was dedicated to knowledge transfer and featured three talks: “From research to innovation, support system at Chalmers” (Bo Norrman), “From research to real-world impact: knowledge transfer and innovation at Chalmers Industriteknik” (Bernd Ketzler), and “HybridNeuro Hub” (Tanja Botić, Aleš Holobar, Roger Esteban Vives).
Alongside the lectures and training, we took the time for social activities. We explored Gothenburg together, enjoyed Swedish fika (meaning to take a break, sit down with a friend for a cup of coffee and some baked goods), went bowling, relaxed in the public sauna, and even took a cold dip after it! These moments were a great chance to connect, share ideas, and have fun together.
A big thank you to all the participants who made this week such a great and memorable experience!
